“What should I draw today?”

“Draw a station where people can go to get rides on carts pulled by animals. All kinds of animals: giraffes, oxes, camels, unicorns, chimpanzees. There should be a sign on the wall, on the left, where the passengers wait, that has twenty-five cities, and the prices. If you want to go to a different city, you ask the ticket agent, and he can tell you how much it costs.”

I showed him the drawing. He approved on the whole, only he’d wanted an area where the passengers could sit down.

“What is this place called?”

“‘Silliecarnade’. Spelled like this,” he wrote it, “with no space.”

“Why that name?”

“I don’t know. It just seems right.”
